Welcome back to your weekend highlights! With the province finally starting to reopen everything, weekend events are slowly being planned and executed. This weekend brings about an extremely important event, especially given the times we live in.
I remember when, in the early grades of public school, my class went on a field trip to Uncle Tom’s Cabin in Dresden. The stories we were told of the Dawn Settlement and Josiah Henson had shocked us, though I don’t think we fully understood them very well at the time.
To bring awareness to the horrible events of the past and celebrate the abolition of slavery, Canada created Emancipation Day. Running Monday July 26th to August 1st, Uncle Tom’s Cabin is holding a week-long virtual celebration. Along with their regular guided tours, there will be guest speakers scattered throughout the week, ending it with a celebration of recognition for all presenters and performers. More details of the week’s itinerary can be found on the Ontario Heritage Trust’s website (https://www.heritagetrust.on.ca/en/properties/uncle-toms-cabin/special-events-and-programming) and on their various social media channels!
Though more events are happening, and group sizes are bigger now than they’ve been in a while, remember to be safe. See you guys next week!
