Welcome to a new blog series of information provided by our staff members and volunteers. While we are still unable to open and welcome everyone back, work is continuing for our 2021 exhibit, our house, the grounds of the park, and setting up exhibits for our new agricultural centre. We will also be hosting 3 events late this summer and into the fall, as well as attending a birthday day celebration for Colonel Thomas Talbot.
We have information for our 2021 events, so please mark your calendars and watch for ticket sales. All our events will be held following the COVID-19 protocols that will be in place on those weekends.
The first date to mark will be for July 17/18, 2021. Our museum will be attending a celebration of the birthday of Colonel Thomas Talbot which will be held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church just up the street on Lakeview Line. Rev. Canon Nick Wells is organizing this event which will include a military encampment, musket demonstrations, and refreshments. A toast to the Colonel will be at his gravesite across the street from the church. This will be a free events, however if COVID restrictions are in place, visitors may be asked to alternate visits to the encampment and the cemetery. More information is available on Facebook at “St. Peters Anglican Church” or on their website at www.stpeterschurchtyrconnell.org.
In August, we will be hosting a new event, Merchants at the Museum. Come out and visit on August 21/22 to see what our historical crafters have to offer. Many of the crafters are feature hand made items from a variety of time periods. In addition to a wonderful opportunity for early holiday gift shopping, there will be entertainment, food, and family activities. This is a free event, however any COVID restrictions may affect the number of visitors on site at one time. Watch for details later. More information is available on Facebook at “Merchants at the Museum” or by email at heritagemerchants@gmail.com.
Labor Day weekend brings us to our Heritage Farm Show on September 4/5. This annual event features the opening of our new Agricultural Centre and many outdoor farming related exhibits. There will be a collection of tractors and other farm equipment, food, entertainment, and family games. Tickets will be available around the first part of August and available on our website. If you would like to take part, please contact the museum at info@backuspagehouse.ca.
Our fall events come to an end on September 25/26 with our Life in the Talbot Settlement weekend. This year’s event will feature our War of 1812 events and will have heritage crafters, reenactor camps, musket demonstration, food, and if COVID restrictions permit, a skirmish in our back field. Join in the fun of a raid on the house by the invading American forces and afterwards join in a militia drill for all ages. Tickets will be available around the first part of August and available on our website. More information is available by contact the organizer at bethgolds@backuspagehouse.ca or on Facebook at “Croghan’s Company of Reenactors”.
As you see, we have a variety of fun events planned for this year. If you would like to part of any of these, contact the organizers or the museum for more information. The museum staff is always looking for more volunteers to help in many ways. We are also looking for help to get our agricultural centre up and running, especially anyone with woodworking skills to build the exhibits.
Be sure to mark you calendars and watch our website and Facebook for more information as we head into the summer.
