Spokeshaves are one of the many tools used by a carpenter. This tool’s purpose is to flatten and smooth complex shapes into wood. The spokeshave has an adjustable blade that can be set to the desired depth. There are two wooden handles, once painted red, on either side of the blade/body. Unlike a regular plane, this lets the carpenter control the pressure and execution of the cut. Since prehistoric times, the spokeshave has been a useful tool. Of course back then the blade was made of stone instead of metal. Even today you can find this handy tool in many workshops, as it is great for finishing off round surfaces for a more decorative touch. Some projects the flat spokeshave is good for are the outside of an arch, or the seat or back of a curved chair.
